Andover Football Club Fold - By The Andover Advertiser

More than 125 years of continuous football came to a sad and inevitable end on Friday when Andover Football Club's remaining board members announced that the club were to be wound up with immediate effect and they would be resigning from the Southern League.

It was news which stunned many but equally came as little surprise to others as the Portway-based club had stumbled from one crisis to another in recent years and had been forced to resort to advertising in the national football press for prospective new benefactors prepared to fund them on the pitch.

It appeared that a new board was in place and ready to tackle the season in the Southern League along with a revamped reserve team in the new Wyvern League but newly-appointed chairman Martin Moody resigned on Wednesday.

His statement read: "It is with regret that I have resigned as chairman of Andover Football Club. During the last three weeks many ghosts have appeared out of cupboards to a point where I am not prepared to put my name as chairman as I find this totally unacceptable and will not work in this kind of environment."

Moody arrived last month along with Southampton FC youth coach Steve Moss, with whom he had much success with neighbours Winchester City a few years ago but Moss landed a full-time job with Football League side Rotherham United which left the new chairman to pick up the pieces.

After hearing of the decision to dissolve Andover Football Club Ltd, chairman of Andover Youth FC Phil Holloway issued this statement. 'I, as Andover Youth FC chairman, would like to catagoricly state that Andover Youth FC have no financial involvement and we are independent of Andover FC, and we will continue with our youth banner'.

AGM Report - By John Gorman

The AGM was held last Monday at AFC Totton's ground with all Clubs represented apart from Shaftesbury, though special dispensation had been given to Newport, Cowes Sports and Brading, as well as Board Members Lee and Lisa Bray, to miss the evening because of travel problems caused by the Isle of Wight festival. The Clubs had communicated their views by e-mail whilst East Cowes Vics were represented by a Club member who lived on the mainland. Apologies were received from Malcolm Watts, Ian Harley and ray Murphy.
The Chairman opened the meeting with a review of the season just finished and complimented Clubs on their performances in the FA Competitions, especially Poole Town, who were also given the League's best wishes for their move into the Southern League. For 2011/12. With the Clubs having made their decision as regards reserve team football he welcomed the newly formed Wyvern League and wished it well in its inaugural season. He marked the League's progress citing the tie-up with Solent University and its nomination for an FA Respect Award. The League was still working hard on the Discipline front and had financially rewarded those with the best disciplinary records at the recent Dinner and Dance. The latter event had been rather special this year as it had celebrated the League's 25th Anniversary and it was a well attended success and thanks were expressed to Ray Murphy and his team for all their hard work regarding same. He finally thanked all members of the Board for their work over the season with especial mention to Vice Chairman Ian Hoare and Dennis Challis, the latter standing down as Referees Secretary after many successful and hard working years in that role.
The Secretary's report was accepted without comment and the Treasurer produced and explained the Accounts and was thanked for his stewardship of the League's finances over the course of the year.
The League's constitution for season 2011/12 was put forward by the Board and accepted by the Meeting. The Premier Division had lost Poole Town through promotion but with Andover surprisingly not being relegated two clubs, Downton and Horndean, were promoted and only one, Brockenhurst, relegated. Division One had lost Shaftesbury who had expressed a wish to return to Dorset football, but gained Team Solent who were promoted from the Hampshire Premier league meaning that overall the Division would have one club fewer that the past season. At this stage team Solent were invited in to the meeting.
The election of Officers saw Dennis Challis elected to the position of Chairman whilst Jon Gittens replaced Lisa Bray as development Officer, the latter having stood down because of increasing family commitments. The remaining Officers were elected en bloc.
Executive Vice President Alf Peckham proposed that Ian Harley, the secretary of Christchurch, be elected a Life Member and this was unanimously agreed by all present. He went on to say that in its 25 year existence the League had seen thirteen clubs promoted to a higher level and fifty five referees promoted, some of whom had progressed to the Football League and FIFA lists. The Chairman expressed his thanks and described Mr Peckham and the Hants FA's John Ward as true stalwarts of the League.
Tony Deverall, Mike Robins, Ian Harley, Trevor Ingram and Hans McDonald were re-elected as club representatives to the League and dates would be arranged for the reps to hold meetings with their allocated Clubs
There was an amendment to Rule 6.2.2 submitted by the registration Secretary whereby clubs would be allowed to re-register their own players for the following season after April 1st and register other players from April 1st.
The Chairman explained the fixture arrangements for next season which had already been circulated to the Clubs and the season would commence on Friday August 12th and finish on the 28th April 2012, The Minimum admission charge would be unaltered.
Details of a possible additional Division One Cup had been circulated and the Chairman asked the Clubs concerned to let the League have their views prior to the August Management Meeting.
The Match Officials fees and expenses for the League had been circulated and the Chairman stressed that we were still one of the cheapest leagues at our level in this respect.
The new larger Team Sheets were distributed and Jim Stokes, Chairman of the Wessex League Match Officials Association, presented their Award for the friendliest Club in the League to Lymington Town.
The meeting closed with John Ward advising that the County FA will be recognising and rewarding Alf Peckham for his services to football and the Chairman thanked The Hants FA for their continued support.

Division One Cup to be considered

Division One clubs in the Sydenhams Football League (Wessex) are asked to notify League Secretary, John Gorman, of their opinions regarding the Division One Cup. This cup will consist of an additional eight fixtures, four at home and four away, to be played midweek. The prize money that was previously given to the Combination Cup winners will go to the winners of this cup.

Alf Peckham to be honoured

Alf Peckham, Executive Vice President of the Sydenhams Football League (Wessex), will be honoured by the Hampshire FA for his services to football - as was announced by John Ward of the Hampshire FA at the AGM.

Technical Areas

We are still experiencing complaints as regards the number of people and the behaviour of same in Technical Areas and are aware that two recent instances have been reported to the HFA.
Can we remind all clubs of Rule 8.22.5 in this respect and also that we are still not prepared to tolerate unnecessary bad language from those areas or elsewhere.

Attendances

Please could all clubs check www.wessexleague.co.uk that all of their attendances are correct and up to date and if not, email media.wessexleague@googlemail.com. From now onwards, Premier Division clubs send SMS results confirming their results from their Premier Division fixtures. This therefore means that attendances are no longer sent to the league. For the interest of the website and club Programme Editors, could all Premier Division clubs either text 07825 828918 or email media.wessexleague@googlemail.com with attendances from their fixtures to update the website with.
