Matchday Round-Ups
MONDAY MAY 7TH
CHRISTCHURCH were victorious in a hard-fought League Cup Final, when they overcame BROCKENHURST 3-1 at Western Way on Bank Holiday Monday. A Sam Griffin strike in the first-half along with a Ben Osborne second-half brace earned the Priory victory but they didn't have it all their own way. Christchurch started the game brightly with Mark Smith causing problems. The midfielder sent a dangerous delivery into the box that Sam Griffin couldn't quite reach and then minutes later he had an effort from the edge of the box that clipped the top of the crossbar. Callum Burt and Ben Osborne both also had opportunities early on but were unable to hit the target. Brockenhurst then ventured forward after a quarter of an hour and Warren Kenna came close with an effort that dipped just past the post. Ashley Booker also came close for the Foresters shortly afterwards. The deadlock was broken midway through the first-half when Sam Griffin drilled a low effort into the bottom corner, past Scott O'Rourke in the Brockenhurst goal. Brockenhurst responded well to going a goal behind, and Ben Sullivan had an effort saved by Joe Prodomo. Shortly afterwards, Brockenhurst sent a dangerous free kick into the penalty box. The kick evaded everybody including Prodomo and struck the post before being eventually cleared off the line. Warren Kenna was the next to come close for Brock with a header that went over the crossbar and Christchurch preserved their lead going into half-time.
Three minutes after the restart and it was all-square when Warren Kenna scored a contender for goal of the season. Kenna saw Christchurch goalkeeper, Joe Prodomo, off his line, and he launched an ambitious effort towards goal from fully 35 yards, which went over the stranded goalkeepers' head and into the goal. Christchurch then went back into the ascendency once again and Callum Burt had an effort just over the crossbar. Brockenhurst responded once again and Richard Morse and Carlo Tate both came close. Fifteen minutes from time, there was a mix-up in defence with Scott O'Rourke and a Brockenhurst defender and Christchurch striker Ben Osborne capitalised by firing the ball into the empty net. Christchurch pushed to further their advantage and Mark Smith volleyed wide from an Osborne cross. Russell Cook then twice came close when firstly, he was denied by O'Rourke from close range and he then rounded the keeper only to have an effort cleared off the line. Richard Morse went down the other end in a bid to find a late equaliser for Brockenhurst, but he shot just wide. Then Christchurch ventured forward and Paul Roberts was tripped inside the penalty box. Ben Osborne smashed home the spot kick, sending O'Rourke the wrong way and sending the Christchurch supporters into raptures.

WARMINSTER TOWN and FLEET SPURS drew 2-2 at Weymouth Street. The hosts went ahead after just ten minutes when a powerful drive from James Vincent went past Ryan Bone in the Spurs goal and into the back of the net. 20 minutes from time and Louis Sparey scored a carbon copy of Vincent's opener to double the hosts' advantage. Spurs came back however and ten minutes from time, centre back Dave Richards scored. FRIDAY FEBRUARY 17TH 2012
TOTTON & ELING produced a fine display to beat ALTON TOWN 4-0 at Little Testwood Farm on Friday night. The Millers were in devastating form in front of goal, scoring four times and even missing a penalty. The hosts started brightly and the visitors were given their first warning after less than a minute when Craig Atkinson was forced into a save. Just two minutes after that the deadlock was already broken when some poor defending from the Brewers gifted Steve Jenkin an opportunity which he fired in the bottom corner to put the hosts ahead. After quarter of an hour, Totton & Eling doubled their advantage. A deep cross was sent into the Alton Town penalty box and Callum Oliver looped his header into the path on the onrushing Terry Cox who smashed his effort past Atkinson and into the roof of the net. The visitors finally began to get into the game and they forced Webb into a save in the Totton and Eling goal after 20 minutes. However, just when it appeared that the Brewers were applying some pressure, Totton and Eling were awarded a penalty, which resulted in Steve Brown getting booked. Steve Marwood took the spot kick, but his penalty was saved superbly by Atkinson who dived low to his left to beat the effort away. Alton used this save as a springboard and came to life with Steve Brown coming close. However, any hopes of a comeback were put to bed five minutes before half-time when a long ball from the Totton & Eling defence caused chaos amongst the Alton back line and Craig Feeney finished superbly from well outside the box, lobbing the stranded Craig Atkinson. Both sides had shots saved just before half-time but the visitors went in 3-0 up. Marwood and Oliver both came close to making it four early in the second half and it was four after 65 minutes when Steve Marwood had a volley from a well-worked corner, cleared off the line, and when the ball came back into the box, Terry Feasey's header gave Atkinson no chance. Steve Brown squandered a glorious opportunity for the hosts late on when he rounded the goalkeeper, only to see his effort cleared off the line. Substitute Dan Steer had an opportunity to make it five when he rose unmarked, but he headed Jon Brock's cross just past the post. Alton substitute Simba Mlambo came close twice late on and caused problems for the Millers defence, but they held firm to keep a clean sheet and secure an impressive 4-0 home win in front of a crowd of 55.

TUESDAY FEBRUARY 14TH 2012
WINCHESTER CITY won 3-1 away at BOURNEMOUTH POPPIES on Tuesday night to cement their position at the top of the Premier Division table. Jamie White's toe poke from an Adam Roberts pass put the visitors ahead. Both Max Cream and Dave Ewen then had opportunities to level for the hosts but these chances were squandered and City then made the hosts pay when Andrew White doubled the score. He tapped home after some good work from Charlie Smeeton. Jack Swann pulled a goal back for Poppies in the second half before City had a great chance to seal the win but Vaughan made a double stop to deny Mark Lilley and Charlie Smeeton in quick succession. Jack Swann then went down the other end and had a chance to level proceedings but he too failed to convert leaving City to break away and Mark Lilley beat the offside trap and Vaughan in the Poppies' goal to make it 3-1 and leave City six points clear at the top of the Premier Division table. HAYLING UNITED produced an impressive display, winning 5-2 away at BLACKFIELD & LANGLEY. Substitute Nathan Lynch bagged a brace for the Watersiders but it wasn't enough. The hosts produced a fine display in a 3-2 home win against Laverstock & Ford at the weekend but the Humbugs left the Gang Warily victorious with all three points. HAMWORTHY UNITED won 4-1 away at HORNDEAN. Brynley McKie scored for the hosts, but goals from Sam Lanahan, Lee Chudy (2) and Steve Whitcher sealed the win for the Hammers. SATURDAY FEBRUARY 11TH 2012
NEW MILTON TOWN produced a dominant display beating NEWPORT (IOW) 5-2 at Fawcetts Field. The hosts went ahead as early as the sixth minute when Alex Baldacchino found the back of the net from an acute angle after having a strong penalty appeal waved away. Just four minutes later and Baldacchino doubled both his and his sides' tally. The visitors pulled a goal back shortly afterwards when Iain Seabrook converted following a Tom McInnes pull back. However the Linnets' two-goal advantage was restored just five minutes later when Alex Moth delivered for Marc Holland who converted. Following the early flurry of goals, the hosts had to wait until the 51st minute to make it four when persistence by Alex Moth paid off and he provided an assist for Baldacchino to complete his hat-trick. Baldacchino even had an opportunity to add another, but he was inches away from connecting to a delivery from Paul Preston. With eight minutes remaining, Linnets skipper Darren Curtis made it 5-1, when he finished Paul Preston's cross. It was 5-2 just one minute later when Iain Seabrook added his second of the match and that was how the game finished despite the visitors having a late penalty shout waved away.
Below are some images from Fawcetts Field today: (Thanks to Paul Paxford)
Elsewhere on Saturday, LYMINGTON TOWN's home game survived a morning pitch inspection at home to FAREHAM TOWN and the hosts were glad that it did as they won the game 2-1. The visiting Creeksiders took the lead on 27 minutes thanks to Rob Tambling and were comfortable until two goals in as many minutes late in the game turned the scoreline on its head and gave the hosts all three points. BLACKFIELD & LANGLEY also managed to beat the cold and they beat their opponents, LAVERSTOCK & FORD, 3-2 at the Gang Warily Stadium. Laverstock & Ford took the lead in the ninth minute thanks to Craig Vigar. Bobby Scott levelled proceedings on the half-hour mark and then debutant Matt Steer put the Watersiders ahead just before the hour. Scott grabbed his second of the game on 73 minutes and although the visitors got a late consolation goal four minutes from time, the hosts held on. Matt Hartfield was dismissed during the match whilst Blackfield & Langley gave debut's to George Bowerman and George Kinber in an impressive home performance that has given Manager, Ashley Vickers, plenty to build on.

Nic Turpin put the visitors ahead after 20 minutes and that lead was doubled through Vince Rusher just three minutes later. A Ross Gregory penalty on the half-hour mark reduced the arrears. Danny Finnigan restored Downton's two-goal cushion just five minutes later. The Russell Cotes Cup tie between WINCHESTER CITY and AFC Totton was postponed as was the Division One fixture between AMESBURY TOWN and TADLEY CALLEVA.
TUESDAY FEBRUARY 7TH 2012
There was just the one game that survived the weather on Tuesday night, and that was CHRISTCHURCH v ROMSEY TOWN, a League Cup Quarter-Final tie at Hurn Bridge, that finished 3-1 to the Priory side. An early Shane Flooks penalty had put Romsey ahead but the hosts were kept in the game by the impressive form of debutant, Joe Prodomo. James Burden did eventually equalise for the hosts late in the first half. Mark Smith put Christchurch ahead from the penalty spot after Tom Jeffes had won the spot kick. Jeffes himself then netted the third to seal Christchurch's semi-final place. SATURDAY FEBRUARY 4TH 2012
Needless to say the weather dominated proceedings on Saturday but two games did survive the artic conditions in Sydenhams Football League (Wessex) Division One. TEAM SOLENT hosted Warminster Town at Test Park on their grass pitch. The league had given The Students special permission to use their 3G pitch but it wasn't required as the sunshine thawed out the pitch and the referee deemed it playable. The Students went ahead in the first half when Luke Williams scored and their lead was doubled with 20 minutes remaining when Leo Churms scored his 19th goal of the season and to compound the visitors' misery, Churms added his second of the match and 20th of the season to seal the win. It wasn't all one way traffic with the visitors threatening to get back into the game at 1-0, but Team Solent held firm and pushed on to seal all three points in front of a healthy crowd at Test Park.
In the other goal that took place today, COWES SPORTS produced a dominant display to beat Hythe & Dibden 6-0 on the Isle-of-Wight. Jimmy Wykes put the Islanders ahead after just four minutes and that lead was doubled when Dom Burbidge found the target. Burbidge added his second and Sports' third on 51 minutes. Three soon became four when Wykes added his second and Josh Appell then also grabbed a brace to complete the scoring and to seal an impressive victory for Sports. This win has sent Cowes Sports ninth whilst Team Solent's win has put them to within one point of the league leaders, Verwood Town.

At the Denplan City Ground, Jamie White once again proved why he is much sought after, scoring four times, including one from the penalty spot. Adam Roberts scored a well taken volley for the hosts and the visitors scored an own goal to complete the six. The only consolation for the Wiltshire side was a penalty shortly after half-time to reduce the arrears but full time was 6-1 to City. TUESDAY JANUARY 24TH 2012
SATURDAY JANUARY 21ST 2012
BOURNEMOUTH POPPIES made it through to the last 16 of the FA Vase for the first time in their history after Kenny Vaughan's side beat Royston Town 2-1 at Victoria Park. James Pinder was fouled in the box and Dave Ewen opened the scoring from the penalty spot inside the opening five minutes. Not longer afterwards and it was 2-0 to the hosts when Hogan scored. JHon Blake was then sent off for Poppies not long before half-time for a second bookable offence. The visitors reduced the arrears in the second half and had opportunities to equalise but Max Frampton was in fine form in the hosts' goal to secure the hosts' place in the next round.
In the Premier Division on Saturday, WINCHESTER CITY stayed top of the pile following a 3-0 away win at NEWPORT (IOW). The hosts started brightly, but it was City who took the lead on 18 minutes when Chris Mason smashed home from just inside the box after good play from Graham Lindsey and new signing Suhael Odeh, who returns to the club from Fleet Town. The score remained 1-0 to the visitors at half-time but the lead was doubled in the second half when Danny King ventured forward and his run ended up with a shot into the goal to make it two. Prolific striker Jamie White made it 30 goals for the season and 3-0 with a goal late on to seal the points. BEMERTON HEATH HARLEQUINS kept up the pressure on City with a 6-1 demolition of ALTON TOWN at Western Way. Jack Slade scored a hat-trick for the hosts whilst Joe Sanger, Joe Fisher and Danny Young all also found the target. Dyer got the only in response for the Brewers from the penalty spot. DOWNTON beat ROMSEY TOWN 3-1 at Wick Lane. Declan McGregor put the hosts ahead in the first half. It looked like the Robins were to hold out for a 1-0 win until Romsey levelled late in the second half. Danny Urry restored Downton's advantage and McGregor got his second of the game in stoppage time from the penalty spot. FAREHAM TOWN and HAYLING UNITED drew 1-1 in an ill-tempered affair at Cams Alders. Both sides were reduced to ten men inside the first half. Rob Tambling got the hosts' only goal, against his former side. HORNDEAN drew 1-1 at home to LAVERSTOCK & FORD with Alex Milroy scoring a penalty for the home side. VERWOOD TOWN beat WARMINSTER TOWN 1-0 at Potterne Park thanks to a solitary goal from Barnett on 18 minutes.
ANDOVER NEW STREET drew 0-0 at home to US PORTSMOUTH. An impeccably preserved minute's silence at Foxcotte Park in memory of Jason Goddard was preceded by a cagey start to this top-half clash. Both sides traded strong challenges and fluent spells of passing without either creating an end product. On the half hour mark, the forces' side came close when they had an effort tipped over the crossbar. Not long afterwards and it was US Portsmouth who again came close when their full back fired his effort beyond the far post. Half-time 0-0.
New Street started the second half brightly and Nic Oliver had a effort caught. The visitors were next threaten when New Street keeper Craig Sams also made a save. On the hour New Street had an ideal opportunity to take the leader. George Dallarda was brought down, the referee signalled advantage and the ball was squared by Isaac Sedu for Danny Sullivan, but he blazed open with the goal at his mercy from only a few yards out. Five minutes later and once again it was the Dallarda and Sedu combination causing problems for the visitors with this time Sedu having an effort saved by the visiting keeper. From the resulting corner, Stuart Anderson rose above the visitors defence, but his glancing header went wide. Moments later and again New Street had an opportunity when a long ball found Dallarda one-on-one with Peter Houkes, but he cleared both the keeper and the crossbar. With 15 minutes left, George Dallarda once again retained possession and drew in the visitors' defence before squaring it for Danny Sullivan, whose effort was well saved by Houkes in the visitors' goal. Late in the game, the visitors made a foray forward and what appeared to be a cross almost looped into the goal, but it dropped just wide of the hosts' goal.
Both sides pushed for a winner late on but the defences stood strong and the game finished 0-0.
WEDNESDAY JANUARY 18TH 2012
BROCKENHURST and AMESBURY TOWN played an entertaining 2-2 draw at Bonnymead Park on Wednesday night in Division One. Richard Morse put the visitors ahead midway through the first half. The hosts came close to snatching all three points in a frantic finale but Brockenhurst held on for a point.
TUESDAY JANUARY 17TH 2012
In the Hampshire Senior Cup Quarter-Finals on Tuesday night, a Ryan Long brace wasn't enough for ROMSEY TOWN who put up a valiant effort but went down 3-2 away at Blue Square Bet South side, Eastleigh. The score was 0-0 at half-time at the Silverlake Stadium, despite Eastleigh fielding a strong side including Mitchell Nelson, Chris Flood, Mike Green, Andy Forbes, Jamie Brown, Damien Scannell, Richard Gillespie, Danny Smith, etc... However, the Spitfires took the lead just two minutes after half-time when Chris Flood opened the scoring. Ryan Long levelled proceedings with a good finish only for Eastleigh to regain the lead through former Winchester City player, Jamie Brown, on 74 minutes. At this point Eastleigh had made all three subs and Jordace Holder Spooner then got injured to leave them with ten men. Mitchell Nelson then scored following an indirect free kick to make it 3-1. Ryan Long reduced the arrears late on and even thought he'd levelled only for that goal to be ruled out for offside and that disallowed goal was followed by the final whistle, sealing Eastleigh's place in the semi-finals of the Hampshire Senior Cup.
Eastleigh are joined in the semi-finals by WINCHESTER CITY, who came from behind to win 3-1 at CHRISTCHURCH. The home side took the lead against the run of play when Sam Griffin curled his effort past Ryan Gosney in the City goal. However, it wasn't long before City were deservedly back on level terms, when Jamie White equalised following good approach play from Charlie Smeeton and Dominic Allen. The sides went in all-square at half-time but City started the second half brightly when Dominic Allen had his free kick saved. Allen then had another free kick, which this time went over the crossbar. Then Christchurch pushed to take the lead and Marc Fairbrother's delivery was inches away from being finished off by Ben Osborne, but he couldn't quite connect to the ball. Charlie Smeeton wasthen stretchered off the field of play and was replaced by Alex Easton. Not longer after this and City completed the turnaround in route one fashion. Ryan Gosney's long clearance was taken down by Jamie White, 25 yards from goal, and he turned and volleyed past the Christchurch keeper and into the goal. Not longer afterwards and it was all over when Mark Lilley's persistence paid off when slotted past Brown and into the back of the net. Jamie Brown had a free kick which struck the crossbar late on, but it didn't matter in the context of the game as City then celebrated the final whistle with a semi-final place sealed.
ALTON TOWN were knocked out of the Aldershot Senior Cup, losing 2-1 to Ashford Town. Both sides went in level at half-time but Ashford took the lead in the second half and held on.
In the Premier Division on Tuesday night, Danny Bowers' GE HAMBLE were unable to capitalise on Bemerton's defeat the night prior, as they lost 3-2 away to BRADING TOWN. Jamie Musselwhite and Lewis Fennemore both found the target for the Planemakers, in a performance that was described as "very poor" by Hamble boss Bowers.
There was a local derby in Division One on Tuesday night, which saw AFC PORTCHESTER hammer neighbours, UNITED SERVICES PORTSMOUTH, 5-0 at the Wicor Recreation Ground. STOCKBRIDGE were due to entertain COWES SPORTS but the game was called off due to a frozen pitch.
WHITCHURCH UNITED were also scheduled to be in Andover Open Cup action on Tuesday night, but their home tie against Ludgershall was called off at the last minute, again due to a frozen pitch.
DOWNTON were 2-0 up at half-time at home to Calne Town in the Wiltshire Senior Cup Quarter-Finals. However, the cup tie was abandoned at half time due to a frozen pitch.
ALRESFORD TOWN are currently 2-1 ahead away at TADLEY CALLEVA in the North Hants Senior Cup Semi-Finals. The game is currently in extra time.
MONDAY JANUARY 16TH 2012
TOTTON & ELING produced an impressive performance, winning 2-1 away at title challengers, BEMERTON HEATH HARLEQUINS. Callum Oliver's goal just before the hour for the Millers was the decisive effort. Steve Marwood converted a first-half penalty to give the visitors a deserved lead after he had been fouled by Dan Metcalfe. The home side equalised not long after half-time when Kane O'Keefe levelled from close range. However, the visitors got the three points that they had worked so hard for when Oliver capitalised on some in-decisive defending from the hosts and fired home past young Oliver Bachelor in the Bemerton goal. Substitute Seb Dawes came close late on for the hosts but Totton and Eling held on.
SATURDAY JANUARY 14TH 2012
WEDNESDAY JANUARY 11TH 2012
TUESDAY JANUARY 10TH 2012
WINCHESTER CITY hit the summit of the Premier Division on Tuesday night thanks to a Leigh Mills penalty five minutes from time. HORNDEAN had defended resolutely throughout but their resistance was finally broken when Leigh Mills was hauled down by Aaron Fennemore and Mills himself stepped up and sent the keeper the wrong way. Earlier in the second half, City had an excellent opportunity to go ahead, but Jamie White's penalty went comfortably over the crossbar. Mills had an opportunity before that for City and Aaron Fennemore came close for Horndean. Mark Lilley came off the bench for City and also came close but Mills' late winner was enough to ensure City went top of the table with three games in hand. Elsewhere in the Premier Division on Tuesday, FAREHAM TOWN came their second clean sheet in a row with a 1-0 home win against FAWLEY AFC at Cams Alders. Steve Cammack got the only goal of the game with his first for the Creeksiders in the 80th minute to win an even game that had few chances.
City's title rivals, BEMERTON HEATH HARLEQUINS, had a tricky league cup quarter-final tie at BOURNEMOUTH POPPIES, the difficulty of which was reflected in the full-time result, BOURNEMOUTH POPPIES 4-0 BEMERTON HEATH HARLEQUINS. Poppies front man Martin Warren was the star of the show with a hat-trick for the hosts and there was also a debut goal for Adam Taylor.
There was also a league cup third round tie tonight at The Bypass Ground which finished ROMSEY TOWN 1-0 NEW MILTON TOWN, however, the scoreline does not reflect the game. New Milton Town produced an excellent display away from home and created numerous chances but were unable to convert any of these. The visitors started brightly with make-shift full-back Tom Donaldson coming close from fully 25 yards. Donaldson, a former Romsey Town, Winchester City, Alresford Town and Blackfield and Langley winger/forward is currently occupying the full-back berth due to New Milton's new dual-registration signings Alex Moth and Harrison Gilkes from AFC Bournemouth playing higher up the pitch. Donaldson's early effort spearheaded New Milton's impressive start and Paul Preston was the next to come close for the visitors when he cut inside his man and dragged his effort wide of the near post. Romsey then forrayed forward and won a free kick. Simon De'Ath took aim from the set piece, but his effort was straight at David Rowe in the Linnets goal. Several minutes later and it was New Milton back in the ascendency when Alex Moth twice came close. Midway through the first half and the deadlock was broken. Gareth Batchelor attacked New Milton from the left and his delivery was converted by Romsey Town's new dual-registration signing, Liam Robinson. Robinson has signed from Blue Square Bet South side, Eastleigh, to cover for Ben White whilst he goes abroad and White was a spectator amongst the crowd at the Bypass and looked on as his replacement opened the scoring. Moments later and Romsey had a glorious opportunity to double their lead, but Simon De'Ath was denied by a smart stop from Rowe. On the half-hour, Alex Baldacchino, a thorne in Romsey's side throughout, robbed the defence and fired over the bar from the corner of the box. Alex Moth had another effort late in the first-half but the Romsey keeper saved well. Late in the first half there was a moment of controversy when Ross Gregory's arm appeared to catch Alex Baldacchino in the face, and the Town skipper was yellow-carded for the offence. New Milton started the second half well and Alex Moth had a free kick saved. Paul preston crossed just before the hour and found Alex Moth unmarked, but the AFC Bournemouth youngster headed inches over for the visitors. Alex Baldacchino again came close with 20 minutes remaining when his effort went just past the far post. With thirteen minutes remaining, the Romsey Town keeper made a point blank save and with five minutes later, Darren Curtis' goalbound flick was headed straight at the Romsey keeper by Baldacchino. Romsey's man-of-the-match goalkeeper made one final save at the end when Alex Moth had an effort from distance saved and Romsey Town blew a huge sigh of relief on the referees final whistle and celebrated a win which sees them book a quarter-final tie with Christchurch at Hurn Bridge.
GE HAMBLE were in Russell Cotes Cup action on Tuesday night at home to University of Portsmouth. The Planemakers were made to work hard for their 2-0 triumph thanks to goals from Doug Rowe and a 20-yard volley from Lewis Fennemore whilst Jon Webb was a spectator in Hamble's goal. Manager Danny Bowers admitted that the visitors worked hard, but ultimately it is the home side that are through to the next round.
