FAREHAM TOWN FC - CLUB HISTORY

The present Club were formed in 1946 following the amalgamation of three Clubs and some of their history can be traced back to the 1800's. Initially the Club joined the Portsmouth League before election to the Hampshire County League two years later.

During their period in the Hampshire League Fareham won every honour within the County including the County League Championship eight times and runners-up on six occasions, the Hampshire Senior Cup four times (including 1992-93 when we beat Farnborough Town 4-1 in the final) and all other Senior County Competitions at least once.

During this time we ran a Sunday side which won the FA Sunday Cup in 1974.

The Club remained in the Hampshire League untl 1979 when an application to join the Southern League was successful in a ballot for election to the League. Initially playing in the Southern Division the Club gained promotion to the Premier Division when this was reformed in 1982. We remained in the Premier Division until 1989-90 when we were relegated back to the Southern Division.

In the National Cup Competitions we have reached the first round proper on four occasions although we have not been able to progress beyond that stage. The closest we came to this was in 1988-89 when we drew away at Torquay United after being two goals up with five minutes to go only to ose the replay 3-2. Our most successful exploit in the FA Trophy came in 1986-87 when we shocked the world of non-league football by reaching the semi-finals before losing to the eventual winners Kidderminster Harriers. During this run we played a total of 10 games beating Vauxhall Conferebce sides Scarborough and Barnet on their own grounds, the Champions and runners-up in their League with Scarborough gaining promotion to the Football League at the end of the season.

Over the years a nmber of notable Town players have moved on to Football League Clubs including Ray Hiron (Portsmouth), Darren Foreman (Barnsley), Dominic Newman (Reading), Kevin Bartlett (Cardiff City), Paul Moody (Southampton), David Leworthy (Tottenham & England at non-league level) and John Hold and Steve Claridge (Bournemouth) with the latter becoming the first and only former player to be involved in a million pound transfer when he moved from Birmingham to Leicester City.

Two former England Internationals have managed the Club, Ray Crawford ex Portsmouth and Ipswich and Mark Chamberlain ex Portsmouth and Sheffield Wednesday who came back again as manager for the 2001-02 season.

With the cost of running a Southern League Club increasing each year the then Board of Directors made a sensible decision that if football was to survive at Fareham the Club would need to compete at a lower level and in 1998-99 entered the Wessex League and FA Vase for the first time.

The Club was taken over in April 2001 by the Ralls Building Group who wanted to take the Club further with the ambition to do well in the Wessex League.

Their first two seasons the Club finished 5th and 7th respectively in the Wessex League and season 2003-04 saw Fareham lose 2-1 to then Conference team Farnborough Town in the Hampshire Senior Cup Final at St Marys Stadium, the home of Southampton FC.
