- CLUB HISTORY
Esso have a long on/off history with the Hampshire League since they were first elected as AGWI United in 1929-30 to the Hampshire League Division Two, but finished 14th and last place in that season. In 1935 they won the Southampton Senior Cup. AGWI played in the Hampshire League until 1939-39, with a highest finish of 3rd in 1933-34. AGWI did not return to Hampshire League action immediately after the war but in 1948- 49 were elected to the 3rd Division (West). Like their earlier debut they had four poor seasons, finishing 14th and last on their comeback, with just 10 points from a possble 52. Renamed ESSO (Fawley) in 1949-50, tha season saw them up one place to 13th then 9th and 14th again before winning their first title, the Division 3 (West)Championship in 1952-53 piping Blackfield & Langley on goal average. However, ESSO found Division 2 difficult gathering only 6 points from 52, 13 points adrift at the bottom. Trying there hand in Division 3 (East) the Oilers again propped up the table with 5 points from 40 in 1954-55. A re-organised Division 3 the following year saw them second from bottom and they dropped out of the League into the Southampton Junior League until 1960-61 when they re-admitted into Division 3. This time ESSO could definitely consider it third time lucky ending a respectable 4th and scoring 103 goals in 30 matches!! ESSO had won the Southampton Wednesday League in 1960-61, a feat repeated in 1967-68. They managed mid-table security finishing 4th again in 1963-64 before slipping to 16th and last in 1967-68. The following year the Division was re-organised and ESSO bottomed out again with their worst ever record of just 3 points! They were last again in 1969-70 and dropped out of the League for the 3rd time. This time the gap was 22 seasons before election to the 3rd Division in 1992-93. In the meantime in 1978-79 ESSO won the Southampton Junior A Cup and were Champions of the League Division. Improvements continued as ESSO won the Senior Division 2 title in 1979-80 and the Senior Division 1 title in 1987-88. Back in the Hampshire League in 1992-93 and learning from past experiences, they made good and finished in the top half of the table for the first few seasons. Their best season was 1994-95 when they finished Champions of Division 3 and runners-up to Romsey Town in the Southampton Senior Cup played at The Dell. In 1997-98 the Club finished 5th in the 2nd Division, their highest position ever. However, the success did not stop and in 1998-99 the Club was promoted into the top flight of Hampshire Football for the first time. In 1999-2000 the Club was promoted to the newly formed Hampshire Premier League. Re-named Fawley AFC and now in the Wessex League Division 2 the first 2 seasons were spent at the wrong end of the table. With the Club re-organised and the young players meeting their potential 2005-06 saw Fawley AFC finish 7th. The League was re-named and with the Club now competing in Wessex League Division 1 the future is looking good with the charms of the Wessex League well and truly in their dreams and aspirations. |
