PETERSFIELD TOWN - CLUB HISTORY

Petersfield Town Football Club was formed in 1993 following the demise of Petersfield United.

Hopes were high for the fortunes of the football in the town when Peter De Sisto became the new Clubs Chairman. The Club were accepted into the Wessex League and former Tottenham Hotspur and England defender Gary Stevens was appointed manager.

Unfortunatly this proved to be a false dawn and the Club failed to prosper. Eventually matters came to a head early in 1995 when the Petersfield Town Council refused to grant a lease on the Lovce Lane ground (former home of Petersfield United and used by Petersfield Town since its formation). The Club was therefore forced to tender its resignation from the Wessex League at the end of the 1994/95 season. Fortunately the Club was saved by a consortium headed by local businessman Geoff Goad and retained its place in the League for 1995/96.

The team built from scratch under the Management of Tony Adams the Club avoided relegation but in 1996/97 despite a promising start results took a turn for the worse and a nailbiting finish to the season ended in relegation to the Hampshire Football League.

Tony Adams left the Club to be succeeded by Ernie Turrell with a rebuilt team centered on local players. A poor run of results culminated in his resignation in January 1998. Mick Cattlin and Bruce Kendall took over and although results improved dramatically relegation could not be avoided. The following season the Club were narrowly pipped for the Division Two title by Paulsgrove but promotion to the Premier Division, newly formed for 1999/2000 was assured.

In 1999/2000 the Club made a strong start but fell away to finish 16th . The following season saw Bruce Kendall in sole charge after Mick Catlin left to join Havant & Waterlooville and the Club was in contention for honours eventually finishing a creditable 9th. Season 2001/02 was disappointing with a 15th place finish and 2002/03 was heading the same way before a superb late run lifted the Club to 10th.

In the summer of 2003 Bruce Kendall unexpectedly left to join Fleet Town and Mark Burton took the helm. The team finished a modest 14th place.

In the 2004/05 season the Club joined the newly formed Wessex League Division Two and enjoyed its best season ever with a very successful League campaign, finishing in 5th place, plus a good run in the FA Vase. Towards the end of the season work commitments forced Mark Burton to stand down and his assistant Mick Cripps took over. Last season was Mick's first full campaign in charge but problems in fielding a settled side prevented any chance of a repeated of the previous season success. The Club had to settle for a 15th place finish although it did enjoy its best ever run in the Wessex League Cup reaching the quarter finals before bowing out to eventual winners AFC Totton.

Mick and his assistant Roy Hunt who joined midway through last season, are hoping for a higher placed finish this time out in the renamed Wessex Division One.

To help support the first team the Club also runs a Reserve side in the Wessex Combination Division Two.
