MONEYS END PORTCHESTER'S HOME RECORD

March 12, 2023

Moneyfields (main picture, courtesy Dave Bodymore) came from two goals behind to grab all three points and end AFC Portchester's 100 percent home record in the Wessex League. The winner coming just five minutes from time,  front of a weekend-best crowd of 448.

As it currently stands, the visit of Horndean on 8 April may go a long way to decide the destination of the title. The Royals also travel to Bemerton Heath Harlequins on the last Saturday of the normal campaign.

LEAGUE TABLES

Horndean kept up their challenge for honours racking up 18 without reply in their last three outings. Five on Saturday at Five Heads against United Service. Zack Willett again on the scoresheet, with a second hat trick of the week.

Bemerton Heath Harlequins now nine straight wins and AFC Stoneham join Horndean on 74 points and are also ready to pounce on any slip up. The Harlequins hit four without reply on Saturday whilst Stoneham just edged a best of three win over struggling Pagham. Bemerton and Horndean join the centurions club of league goals this season with their wins.

The bottom four all lost. Portland’s win saw them jump three teams, courtesy of their 4-2 win, and whilst it looks increasingly likely that Step 6 football will be on Alresford’s menu next season, just seven points separate 13th from 19th slot.

On to Division One, and the promotion race continues apace, four of the top five picked up the three points. The only side to taste defeat was Newport IOW at Magna Road. Hamworthy Recreation came from behind to win 4-1 a win that sees them open up a five point gap over sixth placed Downton.

The Robins went down by the odd goal of three at Whitchurch. New Milton Town hit five without reply against out of form Folland Sports and are the first in the division to hit a century of goals this term, whilst Andover New Street returned to the top of the table by going one better over midtable Millbrook. Ross Cook takes the accolades with a four goal salvo.

Petersfield Town were another team to enjoy hitting six, but Verwood must feel fairly aggrieved to hit three at home in that same match and not get something out of it.

COMING-UP - FIXTURES

Fleetlands stay seventh ten points behind sixth, but with five games in hand.

The scrap at the other end saw the bottom two both losing, whilst both Amesbury Town and East Cowes Victoria shared two goals and the points in their matches, but Ringwood and Whitchurch both won.

All this means that two wins separate 15th from 19th. The race to avoid the bottom three continues to be a competitive area.

AFC Stoneham held their nerve to edge-out Haywards Heath Town on penalties and reach the FA Vase quarter finals for the first time. Duarte Martins put the Purps ahead early in the second half, before the hosts levelled through Henry Watson with six minutes remaining in front of 674 at Hanbury Park Stadium. However, Martins scored the decisive spot kick to continue Stoneham's run in the competition, and join fellow Wessex side, Downton in the last eight. Grassroots football clubs across the country are preparing for one of the most anticipated days in the non-league calendar as Non-League Day 2026 on Saturday, March 28 . The annual event, founded in 2010 by James Doe to celebrate and promote community-run football, is designed to fall on a weekend during the football international break — giving fans of Premier League and Football League clubs without fixtures the chance to explore non-league action. Non-League Day encourages supporters to head to local grounds up and down the country to watch live matches, meet volunteers who run their local clubs and experience the unique atmosphere of grassroots football. Find Wessex League Fixtures On Non-League Day With hundreds of fixtures traditionally taking place at Step 1–6 levels of the football pyramid, clubs often use the day to offer special incentives such as reduced admission prices and community activities to draw in new fans. For many clubs, Non-League Day is more than just a matchday — it’s a chance to spotlight the heart and soul of English football, where volunteer efforts and local pride keep the game thriving far from television lights. Organisers and club officials alike are expected to unveil specific fixtures, offers and events in the weeks leading up to the event. As anticipation builds toward March 28, the non-league community is gearing up for a celebration of football in its purest form — one that brings supporters together, strengthens club-town bonds and champions the grassroots game at every level.
