WEEKEND PREVIEW - JANUARY 14

January 13, 2023

A preview of the likely weather may be more appropriate - we can but hope that Saturday is better than the forecast.

There is a full programme scheduled for both Divisions with Premier Division leaders AFC Portchester defending their 100% home record when Laverstock & Ford come visiting.  The newly promoted Wiltshire side can make life difficult but this is beginning to look like Portchester’s year and three more points should be the outcome.

FIXTURES - COMING UP

Their nearest challengers, AFC Stoneham and Horndean, are both on the road. Stoneham head west to Bournemouth and should come out on top while Horndean have something of a local derby at Baffins Milton Rovers who have a rather inconsistent home record which could count against them.

Bemerton, with games to catch up on, found their shooting boots in midweek and should be too strong for US Portsmouth at Moon Park while Moneyfields, who complete the top five, must be favourites for the points when Portland come visiting for a 3.00pm kick off at Havant & Waterlooville.

Shaftesbury, unbeaten in their last four away games, can stretch that to five when they cross to Cowes Sports and Hamble Club should be too strong at home for Blackfield & Langley, though the visitors did score six last week.

Pagham, with only two away wins to their name, need three points at Christchurch, Hythe & Dibden could well take advantage of Brockenhurst’s inconsistent form and Alresford, with more games to play than most, will be hoping for at least a point when they entertain Fareham whose away form is not the best.

TABLES

In Division One, leaders New Milton Town will be looking to bounce back from last week’s reverse when they visit Millbrook while, conversely, second placed Andover New Street will be hoping to build on last week’s victory when they host Ringwood. Could be wins for both the leading Clubs.

Downton head for Hamworthy Recreation and may have to settle for a share of the points but Newport, who complete the top four, will surely be too strong for Romsey at Smallbrook. Petersfield have an impressive away record which will be put to the test at Fawley, though they should come through, but Andover Town at Fleetlands is difficult to call.

Follands travel north to Fleet Spurs with the home side surely wanting to build on last week’s win while the Whitchurch v Verwood clash could go either way.

Totton & Eling, another club, like Millbrook, with more games to play than most, Journey to Ash United and should at least get a share of the points while we finish with a “crunch” game at Bonnymead Park where Amesbury host East Cowes Vics. Both are in the relegation zone and both seven points behind the side directly above them with points now becoming a necessity.

AFC Stoneham held their nerve to edge-out Haywards Heath Town on penalties and reach the FA Vase quarter finals for the first time. Duarte Martins put the Purps ahead early in the second half, before the hosts levelled through Henry Watson with six minutes remaining in front of 674 at Hanbury Park Stadium. However, Martins scored the decisive spot kick to continue Stoneham's run in the competition, and join fellow Wessex side, Downton in the last eight. Stoneham's victory sets-up a tie against United Counties League Premier Division South side, Coventry United. Downton meanwhile are also just two wins away from Wembley, reaching the quarter finals last week in beating Lymore Gardens 3-0 - they travel to SCEFL Premier Division side, Punjab United - ties to be played on February 28. Grassroots football clubs across the country are preparing for one of the most anticipated days in the non-league calendar as Non-League Day 2026 on Saturday, March 28 . The annual event, founded in 2010 by James Doe to celebrate and promote community-run football, is designed to fall on a weekend during the football international break — giving fans of Premier League and Football League clubs without fixtures the chance to explore non-league action. Non-League Day encourages supporters to head to local grounds up and down the country to watch live matches, meet volunteers who run their local clubs and experience the unique atmosphere of grassroots football. Find Wessex League Fixtures On Non-League Day With hundreds of fixtures traditionally taking place at Step 1–6 levels of the football pyramid, clubs often use the day to offer special incentives such as reduced admission prices and community activities to draw in new fans. For many clubs, Non-League Day is more than just a matchday — it’s a chance to spotlight the heart and soul of English football, where volunteer efforts and local pride keep the game thriving far from television lights. Organisers and club officials alike are expected to unveil specific fixtures, offers and events in the weeks leading up to the event. As anticipation builds toward March 28, the non-league community is gearing up for a celebration of football in its purest form — one that brings supporters together, strengthens club-town bonds and champions the grassroots game at every level.
