WEEKEND PREVIEW - OCT 1

September 30, 2022

A complete League Programme in both Divisions this week and in the Premier Division both the joint leaders are away from home.

Bemerton Heath Harlequins could have a difficult afternoon in the Division’s “Match of the Day” as they travel to Shaftesbury, who, after a slow start have now got in to their stride so to speak.

AFC Portchester meanwhile, travel to Christchurch where they should be favourites for the three points. Hamble Club, in third place, are also on the road with a trip to bottom club Blackfield & Langley and will be hoping to continue their fine start to the season while increasing the home side’s woes.

Horndean head to Bournemouth for the second Saturday in succession having won in the Isuzu FA Vase a week ago and a repeat result is a distinct possibility.

Fareham entertain Laverstock & Ford, whose success so far this season has been in Cup Competitions and are having to catch up on League fixtures. A difficult game to call.

Brockenhurst entertain Baffins Milton Rovers whose form on the road has been disappointing so far while Hythe & Dibden host Alresford who are struggling at present and this should be a home win.

Portland cross to the Island to meet Cowes Sports and on recent form a draw could be the outcome while Moneyfields (pictured) head along the A27 to Pagham. Both sides have made reasonably solid starts to the season and home advantage may be the decider.

Lastly US Portsmouth will be looking for an upturn in fortunes when they welcome AFC Stoneham to Burnaby Road but the visitors may have enough to take the points.

FIXTURES

In Division One the top game is probably at Follands where League leaders New Milton Town are the visitors. The home side have fallen away a little after a good start and a sharing of the points may well be the result.

Second place Downton will fancy their chances against visitors Fawley AFC while Andover Town should be favourites at home to Fleetlands - “Should” but the home side have to bounce back from conceding six in midweek whilst Fleetlands have shown every sign of late of finding their feet at Wessex League level.

Whitchurch United have climbed in to fifth place in the table as well as making progress in the Vase and could maintain their position when they travel to Millbrook while Newport, playing catch-up as far as matches go, must be a home banker when they entertain Fleet Spurs.

TABLES

Andover New Street are also catching upon their League fixtures and make the short trip to Romsey Town on the back of a superb win on Tuesday.

Verwood Town, who have won three of their four matches at home so far, could well make it four against East Cowes Vics while it should be an interesting clash at Hamworthy Recreation. The home side, like Fleetlands, are showing every sign of settling in to the League whilst their visitors, Totton & Eling have made a good start to the season.

Two to go at Amesbury and Ash. Amesbury Town entertain Petersfield Town who have proved themselves difficult to beat so far whilst Ash United, after picking up a point in midweek, could add to their tally when Ringwood Town come visiting. The latter have fallen away after a good start to the season having lost their last three matches - Saturday will decide.

AFC Stoneham held their nerve to edge-out Haywards Heath Town on penalties and reach the FA Vase quarter finals for the first time. Duarte Martins put the Purps ahead early in the second half, before the hosts levelled through Henry Watson with six minutes remaining in front of 674 at Hanbury Park Stadium. However, Martins scored the decisive spot kick to continue Stoneham's run in the competition, and join fellow Wessex side, Downton in the last eight. Stoneham's victory sets-up a tie against United Counties League Premier Division South side, Coventry United. Downton meanwhile are also just two wins away from Wembley, reaching the quarter finals last week in beating Lymore Gardens 3-0 - they travel to SCEFL Premier Division side, Punjab United - ties to be played on February 28. Grassroots football clubs across the country are preparing for one of the most anticipated days in the non-league calendar as Non-League Day 2026 on Saturday, March 28 . The annual event, founded in 2010 by James Doe to celebrate and promote community-run football, is designed to fall on a weekend during the football international break — giving fans of Premier League and Football League clubs without fixtures the chance to explore non-league action. Non-League Day encourages supporters to head to local grounds up and down the country to watch live matches, meet volunteers who run their local clubs and experience the unique atmosphere of grassroots football. Find Wessex League Fixtures On Non-League Day With hundreds of fixtures traditionally taking place at Step 1–6 levels of the football pyramid, clubs often use the day to offer special incentives such as reduced admission prices and community activities to draw in new fans. For many clubs, Non-League Day is more than just a matchday — it’s a chance to spotlight the heart and soul of English football, where volunteer efforts and local pride keep the game thriving far from television lights. Organisers and club officials alike are expected to unveil specific fixtures, offers and events in the weeks leading up to the event. As anticipation builds toward March 28, the non-league community is gearing up for a celebration of football in its purest form — one that brings supporters together, strengthens club-town bonds and champions the grassroots game at every level.
